Work Permits

Work Permits

Work permits are required for anyone under the age of 16. Parents must now access the Work Permit site online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Payment is made directly to the department through the application, using a credit or debit card or by ACH direct withdrawal. Permits are no longer issued through high school offices.

Once the permit application process is complete, the Department mails a paper copy of the permit directly to the employer. Work Permit Website: https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/er/laborstandards/workpermit/

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. I do not have a printer at home. Am I able to do my own work permit online? Yes! Parents are not required to print the work permit for their student. Permits are printed at the DWD office and mailed the next business day.
  2. Is there a waiting period between acquiring an online permit and when the student can begin working? No! As soon as the parent receives the confirmation, the minor is able to start work.
